Dr. Vikram Belliappa, a prominent Gastrointestinal and Liver Transplant Surgeon, boasts over 20 years of postgraduate experience and has performed over a hundred liver transplant surgeries. His medical journey began at Kasturba Medical College, followed by specialised fellowships in liver transplant at Sir Gangaram’s Hospital in Delhi and Queen Mary’s Hospital in Hong Kong. Further honing his skills, he pursued training in ultrasound-guided liver surgery at the University of Milan, where he was recognised as the best outgoing student.
Dr. Belliappa played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Surgical Gastroenterology unit and the liver transplant program at Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospital, Bangalore. His commitment to research and innovation in healthcare is evident through partnerships with Philips Healthcare to investigate the use of MRI in estimating liver fat among Indians, and with Bristol Myers Squibb to explore the molecular profile of Gastrointestinal carcinomas in the Indian populace.
Contributing globally, he engaged in the India Pan Africa project, leveraging telemedicine to bridge the healthcare gap between Indian experts and patients in remote African regions. His entrepreneurial spirit shone through his involvement with a Kenyan startup aimed at enhancing local endoscopic practices by facilitating remote consultations with Indian specialists.
Selected for the prestigious Stanford Ignite program in India, held at Infosys Bangalore, Dr. Belliappa gained invaluable exposure to healthcare entrepreneurship. His passion for education led him to serve as an Assistant Professor at St. John’s Medical College. He also contributed significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he was a part of the Covid treatment team formed at the hospital level to set up a response to the pandemic.
Dr. Belliappa envisions a new healthcare ecosystem for India, centred on data-driven decision-making to make healthcare delivery and research more affordable, efficient, and sustainable, ultimately serving millions of deserving Indians.
